Valparaíso
is a natural amphitheatre-like setting, the city is characterized
by a vernacular urban fabric adapted to the hillsides...Infrastructure
elements dating back to early industrialization are well
preserved in the city. Among them are many "elevators,"
or cable cars, on the steep hillsides. This historic port
city, housing the Chilean Congress, and Viña del
Mar is a modern resort city with shops, beaches, and recreational
facilities as well as residential housing. Valparaíso
and its twin city of Viña del Mar comprise the vibrant
urban environment in a superb physical setting on the Pacific
coast, just two hours by bus from the Chilean capital of
Santiago.
The subtropical landscape of palm and banana trees along
with affordable mass transportation between the two cities,
tourists find it a friendly location to relaxing. In July
2003, UNESCO, the United Nations agency dedicated to education,
culture and science, named Valparaíso a World Heritage
City for its interesting example of late 19th century urban
and architectural development in Latin America.
